When we think of task management software, thoughts of office settings generally spring to mind. Asana, Notion, Monday, these efficient software programs are an integral tool in the seamless productivity of today’s working environments. But what about those in the service industry? In the US they make up almost 80% of the nation’s workforce. Are they destined to operate over instant messaging platforms or excel sheets? That’s where Dex comes in. A sleek new app that is transforming how the service industry functions.
This was a multifaceted project that involved product definition, product design, prototype creation and, ultimately naming. Since the target is made up of 20 something service industry workers, the UI had to appeal to a younger generation. We brought in an element of user personalization in the form of funky 3D style avatars. These personalized icons conveyed a sense of community and sociability.
Beyond the general look and feel, the core idea was to create a functional and easy-to-use app. A crucial factor for operating in often fast-paced and demanding environments. Features related to task management, such as adding status options for “faults” (in progress and fixed), shift management, scheduling and cross communication between teams were a must in the product design. Additionally, the creation of onboarding processes geared to both managers and c-level heads allowed for a comprehensive and transparent work system that made the experience cohesive and inclusive for all.
