In 2018, Netta Barzilai had conquered the Eurovision stage with Toy and won Israel the first place in the popular music competition. The winning country is next to host, and so Israel had begun preparing for visitors swarming its cities and especially Tel Aviv, a prominent cultural hub and the informal capital, where Eurovision 2019 is set to take place. Tel Aviv municipality, a highly involved and innovative public entity, had recognised an opportunity to reach out to visitors and better acquaintance them with the mediterranean jam. However, different people have varying needs, interests and expectations - and their numbers are hard to measure and expect, in such extant that might overshadow and limit the process. So instead of minding the demographic, we set our focus on behaviour, association and scenarios. This is what new traveling is all about. The new traveling isn’t just about guiding: it’s about enabling experiences.
The best way to really get to know a new place is through the eyes of a local. They’re valuable knowledge is what truly shifts your experience from visitor to explorer, allowing you to travel in ease. But simply piling events on your must-see list isn’t enough: there is an overwhelming number of platforms with different information that we have to dig up and cross-check, then plan our days without feeling FOMOd or exhausted. There are also the elusive basics: public transport, national holidays, working hours, experiences suitable for children, etc. Following a thorough research on travel apps and interfaces, high-profile metropolitans and official city websites, we’ve concluded that the key to quality traveling interfaces lies in personalization. This saves us time, effort and money, and makes us feel truly anticipated and not just welcomed. We’re looking for maximum ease and availability, so we can plan our journey instead of rushing through it.
