Israel is news-ridden. News has always been an essential source of social and cultural unity here, and although abundant at this point, the news continues to be the town square. Loads of technological advances and many platforms later, our knowledge consumption abilities have evolved greatly. We live in a world of notifications and actively operate our app use – so the news went from a one-track experience to an interactive dialogue. Its user experience has to align with every other content platform and changing basic needs. Ynet, one of Israel’s biggest news and content brands, tuned to us when it was high time to evolve from center stage to front line.
The biggest challenge in user experience is the power of habit: when using our go-to apps or content websites, our eyes and fingers automatically lead the way to what is most relevant to us. In that sense, relevance becomes a double challenge: we must create an advanced and meaningful news interface that stands out near competition and in an ever-changing world; and create personal relevance and a sense of belonging within users. Keeping Ynet as a leading platform for any knowledge thirsty user was significant – while balancing key features that stood out in our research.
Balancing text and video, personalization, feed scrolling compared to a traditional hierarchical homepage, clear and easy navigation, and of course, ad space – the bread and butter of every content platform. Balancing text and video, personalization, feed scrolling compared to a traditional hierarchical homepage, clear and easy navigation, and of course, ad space – the bread and butter of every content platform.
Designing Ynet’s new structure, we’ve considered all the above so it can scale up into the future. We’ve placed video as its main feature, because we know that’s how knowledge and information are consumed and shared today: while reading allows us to go deeper, videos draw you in. News updates were placed in an eye-catching carousel or scroll for smartphones, and a lower navigation menu was added to mobile version, allowing a curious thumb to scroll faster. Personalization is an integral part in user experience – so we’ve added a For You tab to collect and curate preferred content, and Ynet+, paid members club for those who has to stay connected all the time. Moving on to design, it was important to us that the new platform language preserves existing assets, yet strive to constantly improve them. New icons were created to boost functionality and promote a clear user experience. We chose Narkis Block as our font, as it is highly legible and charismatic. Ynet’s color palette is well recognized, so we’ve kept it and added a soft grey for a techie, unique touch.
Thanks to the new digital product and the great brand work, Ynet maintains its spot as the digital square of Israel.
